What happens when a man listens to his worst fears?
Even the strongest man can be destroyed by jealousy and rumor. In this re-telling of Shakespeare’s play, Otello, a warrior, returns home from battle. Now the governor of Cyprus, Otello has made a deadly enemy: the treacherous Iago, who pretends to be his friend. As Iago spins a web of deceit and lies, Otello begins to doubt the faithfulness of his beloved wife, Desdemona. Caught between evil whispers and the voice of his own heart, Otello must decide what – and who – he believes.
Often considered Verdi’s greatest opera, Otello is faithful to the text of Shakespeare’s original play. Tenor Allan Glassman, a gifted mainstay at the Metropolitan Opera, portrays the tragic Moor. His towering presence is the perfect complement to the set’s tall, dramatic projections, powerfully evoking the stormy Venetian harbor. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
